JOSIN BURNING (FOR A NEW START)

German composer and producer Josin has announced the release of her debut album In The Blank Space for January 25th 2019, and with that news comes the utterly spell-binding single ‘Burning (For A New Start)’. The song opens with electronic tones imitating the sounds you’ll hear over the telephone line, whether the recipient is busy, the conversation has ended, or the automated voice asks you to leave a message. Josin takes this as her cue for “a sarcastic conversation with yourself about the end of the world.” From here, the song softly evolves into layers of synths and samples, over which the composer’s gritty vocal adds its own haunting atmosphere. Like the contrast of stone and sea in the Marc Neckermann directed video, the introduction of orchestral strings rubs up along the oscillating electronics, both acting as all-consuming elements that eventually wash out Josin’s voice. The brutal Norwegian landscape certainly does have an apocalyptic feel in this sublimely shot video. As Josin further explains, “You know that you are part of the bad but too comfortable to make a change. Like for example everyday habits that have an impact on our environment - we know they’re bad but we don’t quit them. The very consequence of those little lies is a run-down place that can’t be fixed and has to start all over again. Maybe without us. But that's not what I wish for of course - I want to draw an extreme picture of conscious self-destruction, hoping for the opposite.” - Hannah Thacker
